Screaming Frog SEO Spider

Desktop crawler that still sets the bar for technical audits

Screaming Frog SEO Spider is desktop software, not a cloud platform, and that single decision shapes everything about how it's used. It runs on your own machine, so a crawl's size is limited by your RAM and storage rather than a subscription tier, and there's no dashboard to log into or account to provision for a client. You open the app, point it at a domain, and it crawls like a search engine bot would, following links and pulling back status codes, page titles, meta data, headings, and canonical tags for every URL it touches.

That local-first design is also its main trade-off. A five-person agency running large crawls needs five separate licences and five machines capable of handling the memory load, where a cloud crawler would just add a seat. Screaming Frog doesn't try to be a collaboration platform: there's no shared dashboard, no scheduled report emailed to a client automatically, no built-in team permissions. What it does instead is stay fast, cheap for what it does, and genuinely comprehensive at the level of a single crawl — duplicate content detection, hreflang auditing, structured data validation, and a custom extraction engine that can pull arbitrary data out of the page source using CSS, XPath, or regex.

The free version is capped at 500 URLs per crawl, which is enough to get a feel for the tool on a small site but not much else. Nearly every real use case needs the $245/year licence, which removes that cap entirely (up to what your hardware can handle) and turns on JavaScript rendering, crawl comparison between runs, and integrations with Google Analytics, Search Console, and PageSpeed Insights so crawl data and performance data live in the same export.

Inside Screaming Frog SEO Spider

Crawl like a search engine

Follows internal and external links, images, CSS, and scripts the way Googlebot would, surfacing broken links, redirect chains, and response codes for every URL crawled.

JavaScript rendering

Renders pages with a headless Chromium browser so JS-injected content, links, and metadata show up in the crawl instead of being invisible to it.

Custom extraction

Pull any data out of the page source with CSS Path, XPath, or regex, useful for scraping structured data, prices, or custom attributes at scale.

Log File Analyser

A separate bundled tool that parses raw server logs to show exactly which URLs Googlebot and other crawlers actually requested, not just what you think they crawled.

Integrations

Pulls in Google Analytics, Search Console, and PageSpeed Insights data alongside the crawl, so technical issues and performance/traffic data sit in one export.

The trade-offs with Screaming Frog SEO Spider

Strengths

  • One of the fastest crawlers available since it runs locally rather than over the network
  • Extremely deep feature set for the price, particularly custom extraction and near-duplicate detection
  • Free tier is genuinely useful for small sites, not just a demo
  • Actively maintained with frequent feature releases

Limitations

  • Per-seat desktop licensing gets expensive fast for agencies running multiple machines
  • Crawl size is bound by local RAM, so very large sites need a beefy machine
  • No built-in collaboration, scheduling dashboard, or client-facing reporting layer
  • Steeper learning curve than cloud tools with guided workflows

Verdict

Use Screaming Frog SEO Spider

  • One-off technical audits and pre-launch site checks
  • Bulk metadata, redirect, and status code audits
  • Scraping structured data or custom attributes at scale
  • Cross-referencing crawl data with log files via the bundled Log File Analyser

Skip Screaming Frog SEO Spider

  • You need a shared, always-on dashboard your whole team logs into
  • You're auditing sites in the tens of millions of URLs without dedicated hardware
  • You want automated recurring crawls with alerting, not manual runs
