Ahrefs

Backlink and keyword data at scale, built for serious SEO work

Ahrefs built its reputation on backlink data, and that index is still the deepest reason to pay for it. Keywords Explorer sits alongside it and is just as central to how people actually use the product day to day: search volume and difficulty across an enormous keyword database, clickstream-based click metrics that estimate how many searchers actually click through rather than get answered directly on the results page, and keyword clustering that groups variants into a single content target.

Content Explorer and Site Audit round out the platform into something closer to a full SEO suite than a single-purpose keyword tool. Content Explorer is particularly useful for link prospecting, surfacing pages that already rank for a topic so you can pitch them directly, though it is excluded from the entry-level Lite plan.

Ahrefs runs on a credit system for crawls and API calls that takes some getting used to, and the company is explicit that it does not run discounts or offer a free trial beyond the limited Ahrefs Free tier scoped to your own site. Pricing is not negotiable at the lower tiers the way some competitors' sales teams will bend on renewal. For agencies and in-house teams doing this work daily, the data depth justifies it. For occasional use, the entry price is a real barrier.

Rank Tracker sits inside the same platform as Site Explorer and Keywords Explorer, tracking positions across more than 190 locations down to the ZIP code, on both desktop and mobile. It checks 19 SERP features, including AI Overviews, and Share of Voice and Traffic Value charts turn raw position data into a single trend line instead of hundreds of individual rankings to scan through one by one.

Site Explorer is the reason a lot of people pay for Ahrefs in the first place: one of the largest, most consistently refreshed backlink indexes in the industry, with Domain Rating and URL Rating giving a fast read on link value. Link Intersect shows which sites link to several competitors but not to you, straight from the same index, and Content Explorer's link-prospecting angle means outreach targets and their most link-worthy content come from one search instead of two separate tools.

Verdict

Use Ahrefs

  • You need backlink data deep enough for real competitive link analysis, not just keyword volume.
  • Your team runs technical SEO audits often and wants crawl issues flagged automatically.
  • You track rankings and want click estimates, not just raw search volume.
  • You'd rather run keyword research, backlinks and audits from one platform than stitch three tools together.

Skip Ahrefs

  • You only need keyword research and never touch backlinks or site audits.
  • Budget is tight. $29/mo is the entry price, and most real use needs a higher tier.
  • You want something lighter than a full SEO suite.
