Google Search Console

Google's free tool, and the only source of real click and impression data

Search Console is Google's own first-party tool, and it's completely free. It's the only rank tracking source that comes directly from Google rather than being scraped, simulated or estimated by a third party. The Performance report shows actual clicks, impressions, average position and click-through rate, broken down by query, page, country and device, pulled from real Google Search activity on your own site.

That's also what makes it genuinely irreplaceable rather than just a free option among paid ones. No third-party rank tracker can show you real clicks and impressions, only Google has that data. And because it reports on every query your site actually shows up for, not just a list you manually added, it surfaces queries you'd never have thought to track in a dedicated tool. Every website should have this connected regardless of what paid tracker sits alongside it.

The limitations are real, though, and worth knowing before you rely on it as your only rank tracker. "Average position" is exactly that, an average across every location, device and day in the date range you've selected, not a precise rank from a specific city on a specific day the way a dedicated tracker reports.

The query table caps at 1,000 rows in the UI (the API allows up to 50,000 rows a day per property, but that takes technical setup to use), low-volume queries get aggregated or withheld for privacy, and history only goes back about 16 months.

There's no competitor tracking, no white-label reporting, and no way to check a precise position on demand for a specific location, all things a dedicated rank tracker does that Search Console simply isn't built for. Treat it as the free baseline every site needs, and pair it with a dedicated tracker when you need exact daily positions, competitor visibility, or client-facing reports.

The trade-offs with Google Search Console

Strengths

  • Completely free, and the only source of real click and impression data from actual Google Search
  • Automatically surfaces every query your site ranks for, no manual keyword list required
  • Directly from Google, so there's no scraping or estimation involved

Limitations

  • Average position is averaged across locations, devices and the whole date range, not a precise daily rank
  • No competitor tracking, no white-label reporting, and no on-demand check for a specific location
  • Data lags and history only goes back roughly 16 months

Google Search Console plans and pricing

Entirely free, no paid tier, no card required. The tradeoff for the free price is averaged position data and no competitor or white-label reporting.
